Cwtch

A distinctly Welsh word, often described as impossible to translate cleanly into English, since "hug" or "cuddle" only capture part of what it means. Its second sense is a small cupboard or cubbyhole, often the space under the stairs. Because cwtch has no matching word in any other Celtic language, most linguists believe it's a loanword, likely from the Old French "coucher" ("to lay something down"), introduced following the Norman presence in Wales, and ultimately from the Latin "collocare" (to place together). It has since become something of an unofficial ambassador for Welsh identity, even as its own deep roots remain a "believed" theory rather than a settled one.
