Privacy Policy

D.V.C.I. is a small, independently run site, so this is a short, plain-English policy rather than a wall of legal text. Last updated 1 August 2026.

Who we are

D.V.C.I. (Dictionary of Very Curious Idioms, dvci.com) is run by Ian Garner. For any privacy question or request, contact hello@dvci.com.

What we collect, and why

Newsletter signups. If you subscribe, we collect your email address to send you the newsletter, starting with a welcome email. We don't ask for anything else, and we don't sell or rent it to anyone.

Comments. If you post a comment on an idiom, we store the comment text and, optionally, a name (leave it blank and we'll show "Anonymous"). New comments are held for a quick manual check before they appear publicly, mainly to filter spam. Once approved, a comment and any name you gave are visible to anyone viewing that page.

Reactions. The emoji reaction buttons are anonymous. We store an aggregate count per idiom, not who clicked what. Your browser remembers locally (via local storage on your own device, not a tracking cookie) which reactions you've already used, purely so you can't repeatedly react to the same idiom.

Contact. The Contact page opens your own email app via a standard mailto link. We only see what you choose to send us that way.

Analytics. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see aggregate numbers like how many people visited a page and which sites referred them. It doesn't use cookies, doesn't track you individually across visits, and doesn't build a profile of you. We don't run any advertising trackers on the site.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of trusted service providers to run the site, and your data may pass through them:

These providers may process data outside the UK, and each has its own privacy and security practices. We don't share your data with anyone for marketing or advertising purposes.

How long we keep it

Newsletter emails are kept until you unsubscribe. Comments are kept as part of the public record of that idiom's page unless you ask us to remove one. Reaction counts are aggregate and not tied to an individual.

Your rights

You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in any email we send. You can ask us to remove a comment, tell you what data we hold about you, or delete it, by emailing hello@dvci.com. We'll sort it out as quickly as we reasonably can.

Children's privacy

D.V.C.I. isn't aimed at children, and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in any meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
