Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining

The core image was coined by John Milton in his 1634 masque Comus: "Was I deceived, or did a sable cloud Turn forth her silver lining on the night?" describing sunlight visibly rimming the edge of a dark cloud. It took roughly two centuries for that poetic image to solidify into the full proverb, appearing in recognisable form in The Dublin Magazine in 1840. American writer Sara Payson Willis, writing under the pen name Fanny Fern, cemented the now-familiar wording as the opening line of her 1853 essay "Nil Desperandum."
