Gadgie
"A man, especially an older bloke, sometimes used for any adult male."
Widely used across North East England, especially in Newcastle's Geordie dialect, to mean a man or bloke. It traces to Romani "gadje" (plural of "gadjo"), the word Romani people traditionally use for anyone outside their community, a non-Romani person. The word entered Northern English and Scots through centuries of contact with Romani and Traveller communities, and appears in numerous spelling variants, including gadgie, gadjee, gadgy, and gaugie, across different regional records.
Sources: Recorded from Romani gaʒe/gaʒo via Traveller cant; documented among the Gipsies of Kirk Yetholm, Scotland, from the early 20th century, and in North East England dialect glossaries.
