Old Wives' Tale Partly True

Cold Showers Boost Your Immune System

"The belief that regularly finishing your shower with cold water strengthens your immune system and helps you avoid getting sick."

The best evidence on this comes from a large Dutch randomised controlled trial with over 3,000 participants, who were assigned to finish their normal shower with 30, 60, or 90 seconds of cold water, or to a no-cold-water control group. The result was a genuine, fairly striking finding: people in the cold-shower groups took 29% fewer sick days from work than the control group. The important catch is what didn't change: the cold-shower groups didn't actually get sick less often or recover faster once they did, their illness rates and durations were statistically the same as everyone else's. The most likely explanation isn't a stronger immune system at all, but something closer to resilience: cold-shower takers seemed more willing to push through mild symptoms and go to work anyway.

Myth vs. FactThe sick-day reduction is real and was measured in a genuinely large trial. What isn't supported is the specific claim that it comes from a stronger immune system, since actual illness rates didn't budge at all.
