Old Wives' Tale Partly True

Spicy Food Clears a Stuffy Nose

"The old belief that eating something spicy will unblock your nose and clear your sinuses."

There's a real, direct mechanism behind this one. Capsaicin, the compound that makes chilli peppers hot, activates a receptor in the nasal lining that triggers mucus to thin and flow, genuinely clearing a blocked nose, which is exactly why capsaicin nasal sprays are used in real clinical treatments for some sinus conditions. The catch is that a stuffy nose is usually caused by swollen, inflamed tissue from a virus or allergy, not simply by thick mucus, and capsaicin doesn't treat that inflammation at all. So the relief from a spicy meal is real, but temporary and cosmetic, your nose feels clearer for a while, then goes right back to being blocked once the effect wears off.

Myth vs. FactThe nose-clearing sensation is a real physiological effect, not a placebo. It just doesn't fix what's actually causing the congestion, so it wears off fast.
