You Have to Wait 24 Hours to Report Someone Missing
"The widely believed rule that police won't accept a missing person report until the person has been gone for a full day."
There has never been a law anywhere in the United States requiring a 24-hour wait before filing a missing person report, for a child or an adult. Police departments and missing-persons organisations are consistent and direct on this point. The myth appears to have spread largely through television and film, particularly crime procedurals, where a "24-hour rule" is a convenient plot device, repeated so often on screen that it hardened into something audiences assumed was real police procedure. The belief isn't just harmless misinformation either: because the first hours after someone goes missing are often the most important for locating them safely, the myth has genuinely delayed real investigations, which is why some places, including Illinois from 2026, have passed laws explicitly requiring police to accept and act on missing person reports immediately.
